Going to Soak Up The Sun

Summer is here!☀️🕶️

I LOVE summer—I love it because June is my birthday month! I love it because the days are longer and the sun shines bright in the sky (which does not happen in Michigan much during the other seasons).  I love it because there is time to be outside and in nature, to wear lighter clothes, and have a break from all of the schedules that guide my life during the school year.

I can feel the energy of the summer—-can you?

The longer, brighter, and warmer days of the year bring an intensity we can notice and prepare for.

Summer invites us all to live more fully, to move more freely, and to reconnect with what truly energizes us.  We may feel our moods boosted as we spend more time outdoors and feel the warmth of the weather. In some ways, this lighter energy reminds us to kick back and allow ourselves to expand and bloom organically like the nature around us.

The bold summer months with its excessive light and heat can also cause us to feel hot, anxious, uncomfortable, and put us at risk of overexerting ourselves.  We may feel an unconscious pressure to “have fun” and enjoy the short-lived summer months.  There are changes in our routines that may set us up to feel lost and disconnected.  The longer daylight can even disrupt our sleep.

All of these realities of summer can become stressful and uncomfortable.

Here are some ways to be mindful about balancing both the intensity and relaxation of the summer season so that you you can fully enjoy the true beauty it has to offer!

  • Spend time in nature

  • Take breaks indoors

  • Avoid the heavy heat of the day

  • Be mindful of getting good sleep

  • Stay hydrated

  • Eat healthy and seasonal

  • Socialize with friends and family

  • Identify and plant some seeds of your desire to set in action when the days get shorter and cooler

  • Tune inward to know what you need each day and honor it

This is your reminder to stop and smell the beautiful roses blooming.  Take a moment to intentionally think about how you want to spend the next 90 days or so of summer. Otherwise, it will pass by like a blur of autopilot routines.

“I'm gonna soak up the sun

While it's still free

I'm gonna soak up the sun

Before it goes out on me”

—Sheryl Crow
